Risk of collision

Rule 7

Use all available means appropriate to the circumstances.

If there is doubt whether risk of collision exists, assume that it does.

A compass bearing that remains nearly constant while range decreases is a classic warning, but an appreciable change in bearing does not automatically make the situation safe. Risk may still exist with:

a very large vessel

a tow

another vessel at close range

Do not make conclusions from scanty information.
