DSC distress button

Exact control layout varies by radio, so follow the manufacturer's instructions.

General sequence:

If time permits, select the nature of distress.

Activate the protected DSC distress control as directed by the manufacturer, commonly requiring a deliberate press-and-hold.

The radio sends the distress alert on Channel 70.

If the radio has valid position data, position is included.

Follow with a voice MAYDAY on Channel 16.

Remain available for response.

A radio with no internal GNSS and no valid external position feed cannot magically transmit a current position.
