Fueling

Secure alongside or at the fueling point.

Stop engines.

Stop generators and ignition sources.

No smoking or open flame.

Have passengers ashore where facility rules or safe practice call for it.

Identify the correct fuel and fill.

Close openings through which vapors could enter enclosed spaces where appropriate.

Keep the nozzle in contact with the fill where required for static control.

Do not top off.

Leave expansion space.

Clean any spill immediately and notify the facility as required.

Inspect for leaks and fuel odor.

Ventilate gasoline-powered enclosed machinery spaces as designed.

Operate the bilge blower for the period specified by the vessel/blower labeling and manufacturer before starting gasoline inboard machinery.

Start only when no fuel-vapor indication remains.

Important: Gasoline, diesel, portable tanks, outboard tanks and permanently installed systems do not all use the same procedure.
