Stand-on vessel

Rule 17

The stand-on vessel initially maintains course and speed.

It may take action when it becomes apparent that the give-way vessel is not taking appropriate action.

It shall take whatever action will best aid avoidance when collision cannot be avoided by the action of the give-way vessel alone.

When two power-driven vessels are crossing, a stand-on vessel acting under the discretionary part of Rule 17 should, if circumstances admit, avoid altering to port for a vessel on its own port side.

The give-way vessel is not relieved of its duty merely because the stand-on vessel acts.
