Visibility

The distance at which objects can be seen and identified under prevailing conditions.

Fog, precipitation, smoke and haze can reduce it.

Navigation Rules warning: "restricted visibility" does not have a universal single numerical cutoff. A reported one-mile visibility value should inform seamanship, not act as a binary COLREG switch.
