Practical Seamanship / Boat Systems
Through-hulls and seacocks
Know the location and function of fittings below or near the waterline.
Good practice includes:
inspect regularly
exercise operable seacocks
identify valves
keep access clear
carry appropriately sized soft plugs where useful
know which systems can safely be isolated
Do not close an engine-cooling intake while the engine is operating unless the emergency or manufacturer's procedure specifically requires it.
