Practical Seamanship / Boat Systems
Basic anchoring
Before anchoring:
assess depth
account for tide and expected water-level change
assess bottom
assess wind and current
calculate swing room
identify nearby vessels and hazards
prepare anchor and rode
Then:
lower the anchor under control
pay out an appropriate amount of rode
set the anchor
verify holding
monitor position
Do not hardcode one universal scope ratio.
Required scope depends on:
rode type
depth
bow height
weather
current
bottom
anchor type
manufacturer recommendations
available swing room
