Check people first.

Put on life jackets.

Check for flooding.

Check for fire and fuel leakage.

Maintain or regain a safe navigational situation.

Call for assistance if required.

Render assistance to the other vessel and persons involved where safe and legally required.

Exchange identification and document the incident when immediate danger has passed.

Follow applicable federal and state casualty-reporting requirements.

Do not separate vessels mechanically after a collision without considering whether one hull may be plugging a hole in the other.
