Bowline

These tying sequences are deliberately deterministic so they can be rendered as step-by-step SVG sequences.

Use

Fixed loop that does not normally tighten around the object.

Common for:

temporary loop

attaching a line around a post

rescue and utility applications where appropriate

Sequence

Form a small loop in the standing part.

Pass the working end up through the loop.

Take the working end around the back of the standing part.

Bring it back down through the original loop.

Dress the knot.

Set it firmly.

Limitations

Can loosen or shake out in some unloaded, cyclic or slippery-line situations.

Do not assume a basic bowline is the correct termination for every high-load or life-safety application.
